Blog: Rory wins at the Tour Championship and claims the FedEx Cup

It has been a strange year for Rory McIlroy, so you can only imagine how it felt for him to become the PGA Tour’s first three-time winner of the Tour Championship.

“When I get inside the ropes, no one can get to me,” quipped McIlroy after overcoming a six-shot final round deficit on Sunday to beat Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im by a stroke at East Lake Golf Club.

Despite starting with a triple bogey seven on the first hole he somehow turned on the style to claim a third career FedEx Cup on the final hole – and his achievements were noted across the golfing world.

As one of the PGA Tour’s biggest supporters in its feud with LIV Golf, McIlroy seemed the perfect champion in Atlanta ahead of a week when the Saudi-backed circuit is expected to confirm five more players have made the switch.

The Northern Irishman has repeatedly been asked for his take on LIV Tour because he has been so vocal in his support of the PGA Tour, so he has really enjoyed being back on the course – and it showed at East Lake.

McIlroy shot a final round 66 to finish at 21 under while Scheffler was unable to find his best final round and ended up sharing second spot with Im following his three-over 73.

And McIlroy said: “In some ways it’s fitting I was able to get this done today to round off a year that has been very, very challenging and different.”

He added: “This is a proud moment for me, but it should also be an incredibly proud moment for the PGA Tour. They have had some hard times this year, but we are getting through it.”

McIlroy’s brilliance in the battle for £15m meant Scheffler would receive nearly £5m as a joint runner-up.

His four rounds of 67, 67, 63 and 66 were also crucial in Compare Golf Prices’ SuperFores weekly competition.

Nobody correctly predicted McIlroy’s four scores along with Xander Schauffele’s 66, 63, 70 and 69, so the £10,000 jackpot bundle of golf gear is still up for grabs.

But for the second week in a row a Northern Bogies Golf Society member, this time Matthew Mustard, got the highest scores from his predictions to win the Druids Ambassador Pack weekly prize worth £99.99.

This week’s SuperFores competition is open until 11.59pm on Wednesday, August 31 when Paul Waring and Marcus Armitage’s scores are under the microscope at the Made in Himmerland event in Denmark.
