Blog: PGA Wyndham Championship and SuperFores winner

A little bit of history was created at the Wyndham Championship when Joohyung Kim became the second youngest men’s winner on the PGA Tour since the Second World War. The Korean, aged just 20, is second to only Jordan Spieth in becoming one of the youngest PGA Tour winners in the last 90 years. In doing so he also became the only player in the Tour’s 40-year recorded history to win an event after starting his opening round with a quadruple bogey! In fact, he is only the second player to have succeeded when hitting a quad at any point in his opening 18 holes.

Not bad Kim, not bad at all. He is now guaranteed an immediate place in the FedEx Cup play-offs when he will compete for a $7.5m bonus pool. It’s certainly a fitting prize for a young man whose blistering final round 61 meant a five shot win and an incredible 24-under finish for his final 71 holes.

Anyone out there wondering how you recover from such a horrendous start?

Kim told CBS: “I felt like after that quad, once I started to laugh it off, I could feel like, you know what, I’m in a better mental state. “Instead of getting angry and depressed, I stayed in the moment and I can’t believe I won. Hopefully that doesn’t happen again. But yeah, it’s definitely a week that I’ll remember forever.” It was only Kim’s 15th start on the PGA Tour having only arrived on the scene on a special exemption earlier this summer. Before his success in North Carolina he earned a top-25 at the US Open in June, third spot at the Genesis Scottish Open and a top 50 finish at St Andrew’s in the Open Championship.

Very few will have predicted his success this time around, but he wasn’t the only one celebrating after the golf at the Wyndham Championship had finished. Even though there wasn’t a SuperFores jackpot winner, Compare Golf Prices subscriber Steven Hubery was the winner of the weekly Druids Ambassador Pack worth £99.99. Steven recorded the highest score from his predicted Tyrrell Hatton and Billy Horschel scores from the weekend’s play to win the prize. Hatton finished tied eighth with rounds of 68, 67, 70 and 64 (total 269) while Horschel tied 27th with rounds of 67, 69, 68 and 68 (total 272).

Now all eyes turn to what Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau can do at the FedEx St Judes Championship play-offs to see if anyone can claim the £10,000 SuperFores bundle of golf gear.
