Blog: BMW Championship and SuperFores winner

What would you do if you were tied for the lead with two holes to play? Now imagine it was to win, or lose, the BMW Championship on the PGA Tour.

That was the situation Patrick Cantlay was faced with when he decided to take an aggressive line to cut off the corner of a dogleg. It looked like his ball was hurtling towards a drop in the cluster of bunkers when …

The ball landed short of the last bunker, took a big hop over the sand and tumbled into the first cut before rolling out onto the fairway just 64 yards from the hole.

Perhaps it helps that you’re the world No 4 when you are faced with such a decision, but Cantlay followed that up with a wedge to within five feet and a birdie putt to take a one shot lead before the last.

That was enough to secure a birdie-par finish at Wilmington Country Club to finish one-shot ahead of Scott Stallings – and with it defend the BMW Championship crown he won last year.

“I thought hitting it on that line, it would for sure be in a bunker,” Cantlay told the media afterwards. “Got an excellent break — maybe one of the best breaks I’ve gotten coming down the stretch — and when you get a break like that you need to pay it off.”

Cantlay finished on 14 under 270 and he became the first player to win the tournament in consecutive years and he will start two shots behind Masters champion Scottie Scheffler when the Tour Championship begins.

His success was also celebrated by Compare Golf Prices’ SuperFores competitor Paul McComb.  He recorded the best scores when predicting the rounds of Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris to win the weekly Druids Pack prize worth £99.99.

There was no winner of the jackpot prize of £10,000 worth of golf gear meaning this prize is still up for grabs!

Scheffler’s 273 total consisted of a 68, 67, 68 and 70 while Zalatoris withdrew midway through his third round because of injury. He recorded a 70 and 69 in rounds one and two, with his withdrawal meaning SuperFores creators awarded him Par 71s for the last 36 holes.  Now all eyes will be on how Cantlay and Scheffler perform this week at the Tour Championship in East Lake.

SuperFores has chosen Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele as the golfers whose scores you need to predict to stand a chance of winning one of the prizes on offer through Compare Golf Prices. Both players head to East Lake on the back of top ten finishes too. Schauffele was tied fifth yesterday on 11 under with McIlroy two shots behind in tied eighth.
