Guido Migliozzi saved the best until last to create a bit of history at the Cazoo Open de France.

In doing so, to cap a scintillating final round, he proved there can be a way back if you keep believing on a golf course.

Let’s describe his breath-taking finish first, with his Callaway Apex ’19 four-iron, the Italian’s approach to the 18th off the lake on the left of the distant green rolled to within four feet of the cup.

He sank the first birdie putt of the day with his Odyssey White Hot Number One putter on the notoriously difficult 471-yard par 4 hole to claim his third DP World Tour title. His first since winning in Kenya and Belgium in his rookie 2019 season.

That alone didn’t tell the whole story. Migliozzi had no right to be in the winner’s circle. The Vicenza-born golfer was 13 shots adrift of the lead on Friday night after Rasmus Hojgaard stunned with an opening nine-under par 62 on Thursday before adding a 65.

Then he had every golfer’s nightmare. His sizeable lead disappeared quickly when he followed up an eight on the par 3 second with a bogey six at the third. His lead had gone despite battling back to finish on a 74.

At that point Migliozzi had moved up to tied seventh following a 66 and that paved the way for his final day heroics. His final round 62 was the lowest final round recorded by a winner at that 104-year championship on the outskirts of Paris.

“This is an explosion of feelings,” said the 25-year-old champion, who picked up €510,000.

“This has been an incredible day. I played very, very solid. I was very comfortable with my game. It was one of those days when I love to play golf.

“I love to battle on the course and I received something back from the game. I just kept going and hole-by-hole I was enjoying my game. It was a beautiful day of golf.

“Sunday I proved to myself that I can be really good on the golf course. Here I am with the trophy. It’s beautiful.”

Nobody correctly predicted Migliozzi’s four rounds in the Compare Golf Prices’ SuperFores competition. His 268 total was made up of 69, 71, 66 and that scintillating 62.

The other player SuperFores was tracking was Robert MacIntyre after his success in Italy the previous week. He posted a 67, 70, 71 and 68 to finish tied eighth.

Daniel Anderson was the winner of the £99.99 Druids Ambassador pack for getting the closest to those scores, while the wait for a first winner of the £10,000 bundle of golf gear jackpot prize continues.

The DP World Tour heads for Scotland this week for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Billy Horschel and Danny Willett are the SuperFores players to keep an eye on. Neither of those were at Le Golf National over the weekend.  To get your SuperFores predictions in go to comparegolfprices.co.uk/superfores
