Blog: Meet our Co-Founder Steven Presho

Steven Presho, one of two Compare Golf Prices co-founders, has always had a competitive spirit – just ask his business partner.

Every year Steven and Gary Hunter battle it out for the right to win a dozen golf balls. Whoever manages to have the best handicap secures the prize.

It is a little friendly rivalry that has edged them towards becoming scratch players and eventually one, if not both, of the men from County Durham is likely to do just that.

It is a friendship that has blossomed on the course, a football pitch and in the office – and one Steven was excited to develop as business partners too after creating Compare Golf Prices.

Steven, who has played golf since the age of eight, has the technical and digital know-how to give Compare Golf Prices the perfect platform to hit the market.

And Gary’s business acumen, following years of building up his own extremely successful businesses, provides the ideal balance to deliver what the consumer wants.

Steven and Gary, both single figure handicappers, have wanted to produce an online platform that is right for both the consumer and the club professional. Steven explained …

“During the Covid pandemic, we chatted about our desire to work in golf. Gary had this idea to help the pros sell equipment while helping the consumers to get the right price. We loved it.

“We could really see how Compare Golf Prices would work and Gary wanted to take it on to help the pros, so we came up with the GoLowPro option. We felt it would benefit all parties, so when the opportunity arose, we knew the time had come to put our ideas into action.

“I started playing golf at Castle Eden Golf Club, where my mam and dad played. I still play for Castle Eden and when I went to Sunderland University I played for them against teams across the North, including Welsh teams.

“I had a five-year break from playing, started to play more football, but it’s all about the golf again now – even though I am still a Sunderland season ticket holder going back to the days of Phillips and Quinn.

“That’s my sporting side, and I still compete with Gary for who has the best handicap, but my working career has also shaped me up for this next chapter of my life.

“I left Sunderland University with a degree in internet information systems and went straight into the motor trade, where I first met Gary when he had Lease Cars Direct.

“We worked together at Lease Cars Direct for some time before I moved to a marketing-tech team in the motor trade, seeing the transition from traditional car sales on the forecourt to the new digital age.

“People did more research online and came into the car dealership more prepared than ever, just coming in to get the best price. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

“We are putting all our previous experiences to good use in teaming up to drive Compare Golf Prices forward.

“After that I had a couple of other roles, where I was in charge of developing websites and I created a CRM system. I also helped a private training provider become the first to be awarded outstanding by Ofsted.

“I was also with Gary for three and a half years as head of design at Redu. I have done anything forward facing, visualising, user ability experience and heavily focused on the tech side. I helped with the app development and was very receptive to what the company needed.

“I have always had a diverse skill set of tech, design and marketing, paving the way for this new venture – and if I can get down to scratch before Gary I will be even happier!”
