Blog: BMW PGA Championship round up

“This was one for the good guys,” quipped Shane Lowry after his victory over a BMW PGA Championship field that featured several LIV Golf Series players on Sunday.

He had made his feelings well and truly known at the start of the week by suggesting he couldn’t stand any of the 18 Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Golf players competing at Wentworth.

And he was able to take extra satisfaction when he birdied the 18th to beat Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy by one stroke in what was an exciting ending.

Lowry signed off for a 65 which was enough to finish just ahead of Rahm on 17 under despite the Spaniard’s 62, the result of playing the last ten holes in nine under.

McIlroy failed with a putt (with his TaylorMade Spider Hydro Blast) to force a play-off.

Lowry, the former Open champion, said: "I made no secret how I feel about the whole thing.

"I wanted to go and win the tournament for myself and those who have stayed loyal and done everything for the tour. This is one for the good guys."

The event in Surrey was suspended on Thursday evening following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  Play resumed on Saturday, with the tournament reduced to 54 holes (with SuperFores recording a miscut for round 4 to account for the lost round).

It was Lowry’s first win since the 2019 Open and he was able to celebrate that following his birdie at the last using his Odyssey White Hot Pro 2-Ball putter and Srixon Z-Star XV ball.

McIlroy was one of the golfers Compare Golf Prices singled out for attention in its weekly SuperFores competition.  His rounds were 68, 65 and 67 to finish just behind Lowry while the other, Ian Poulter, was seven shots behind McIlroy after he shot 69, 71 and 67.

There was no winner of the £10,000 jackpot prize and it was a very close at the top of the leaderboard but with the closest predictions and only 1 point in it for the tiebreaker the winner of the £99.99 weekly Druids Pack was Michael Richards.

Now all eyes turn to this week’s competition when SuperFores players have to predict the scores of Francesco Molinari and Viktor Hovland at the DS Automobiles Italian Open.
