What is the easiest golf driver to hit?

This is a common question that beginners and even experienced golfers who are struggling to get the ball off the tee ask and it’s key to understand what certain drivers do to help. Driving the golf ball long and straight is no easy task, it seems to be the holey grail of golf and very much what new golfers are drawn to, even though it’s not where the low scores are made.

However, Driving the ball in the fairway is the best way to give yourself an improved chance of hitting more GIR (Greens In Regulation) which will in turn help reduce your scores.

Manufacturer marketing focuses around hitting longer and straighter but to achieve this they have to work on forgiveness and that is the key to getting more out of a swing that isn’t delivering a consistently square face at impact. This is also why over the years driver heads have increased in size also known as CC. The bigger the head the bigger hitting area they have to achieve more MOI (Moment Of Inertia) which basically means increasing the sweet spot on the face.

There are some fantastic innovations that have been developed over the past 10 years that give golfers more confidence when pulling out the big stick, these include TaylorMade Twist Face which was first introduced in the M3 and M4 drivers and is still prominent in their latest SIM2 and Stealth drivers  it has been a real winner for amateurs worldwide.

The truth is you have to understand your swing to understand which driver will be the easiest to hit and which way the weights are set up. There is also certain factors like draw bias drivers which are specifically designed to help people who slice the ball.

What you will find with most Manufacturer offerings is there are 2 or 3 types of head they produce which are designed to cover off the majority of amateur golfers swing problems. 

Draw Bias – As explained above this is to help correct golfers who slice the ball by offsetting the face into a position to help the golfer get the face back to square at impact by setting it left at address (for a right handed golfer).

Max Driver Head– This is a commonly used term but can be called other things like LS (low Spin) manufacturer dependant. In a nutshell most MAX heads are set with the weight further back as standard and can’t be adjusted, they help deliver a better launch and more forgiving off centre hits using a bigger head.

Tour Driver Head – Normally what you will see lower handicap players use are they tend to have adjustability to fine tune how they like to shape the ball and can be suited to certain conditions on a course by course basis. This head is not really recommended for beginners or people looking to cure inconsistent strikes.

A key thing to remember for beginners and amateurs is that LOFT plays a huge part in all driver heads and until you understand how all these factors work together it will be difficult to choose a driver that will compliment your swing.

Then there is the shaft and how much swing speed you deliver, this can determine how the head is delivered into the ball, the golf swing is a minefield of small details that if you get them wrong it can have a huge impact.
